The Long Red Rods have ten wooden rods each measuring 2.5 cm (about 1″) square and ranging in length from 10 cm to 100 cm (about 4″ to 40″).  The material helps the child differentiate between different lengths, and they are further taught that a long piece can be broken into smaller lengths. Since this activity is conducted on the floor therefore the activity should be performed on an activity mat.
